 leader, councillor Steve Reed to resign after it was revealed that £3million had been stolen from the Council in an internal fraud perpetrated by a housing official recruited by an employment agency. Fitchett rejected Cllr Reed's call to resign, saying that he was not personally at fault. In February 2006 Fitchett resigned from his position as Lambeth's executive member for housing, claiming that the investigation into the fraud had unfairly treated staff in the housing department.
