At the 2009 NCAA Women's Swimming Championships, Hersey placed second in the 200 IM, second in the 200 butterfly, and third in the 400 IM. The Lady Longhorns also placed third in the 4x200 freestyle relay, which Hersey anchored.

Hersey is the daughter of Brian and Regina Hersey, who adopted her when she was three days old. Hersey says she draws inspiration from her father, a financial consultant, who has used a wheelchair since the 1980s after a spinal cord aneurysm, but still maintains an active lifestyle. Her mother is a freelance editor.
