Kabaw Valley

The Kabaw Valley is a highland valley in northern Burma (Myanmar), western Sagaing
division. It is drained by the Mu River
. The valley is the home of a number of ethnic minorities including the Zo, the Mizo, the Kadu and the Kanan.
. It first came under Burmese rule between 1555 and 1559 when Toungoo Dynasty
conquered all of Upper Burma, and made Manipur a tributary state. The region belonged to Burma until the early 18th century when it was occupied by Manipur. Starting in 1724, the Manipuris began frequent raids of Upper Burma until 1750. The Konbaung Dynasty
recovered the valley in 1756, it made Manipur a tributary once more by 1758. Manipur remained a rebellion-prone tributary, prompting the Burmese to send expeditions in 1764-1765, 1770, 1775, and 1782. Burma finally annexed Manipur in 1813 but had to put down a rebellion in 1819.
After the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826), Burma ceded Manipur to the British but the exact border remained in dispute. The British claimed the entire Kabaw valley. However, in 1830, the British, with the assistance of Henry Burney
, agreed that Kabaw valley was not part of historical Manipur, and redrew the border in favor of the Burmese. Nonetheless, some in Manipur still claim that the Kabaw Valley belongs in Manipur.
