In February 1988, Gary & Ann Violet purchased KSPG-FM along with KSPG-AM 1360. The country format was dropped on the FM side for urban contemporary
as KBUZ (see KYQQ
), targeting Wichita despite its poor signal; the country format was moved to KSPG-AM. In the fall of 1989, KBUZ upgraded its signal for better coverage over Wichita; the power increased from 3 kW to 50 kW. Along with an increase in its power, the station changed frequencies from 99.3 to 99.1. The format leaned slightly towards a rhythmic Top 40 direction for a brief period and later moved back to an urban direction.
In December 1991, the Violets once again sold KBUZ along with KSPG-AM. The new owners dropped KBUZ's urban format and changed to contemporary Christian as KTLI "Light 99" once again, leaving the Wichita market without an urban music station. This change again left KBUZ's audience, mostly African Americans, upset over the change in format. KTLI's contemporary Christian format still airs to this day; however, it now carries the satellite fed K-Love
