The station had its beginnings in 1990 as KCMY, a general entertainment formatted independent station. Paxon Communications purchased the station in 1998, changed its call sign
to KSPX, and established it as part of its new PAX Network that year. KSPX has been affiliated with PAX and its successors (i: Independent Television and Ion Television) since then, and was also part of ION Media Networks' purchase of the Paxson stations in the mid-2000s.
