- 0 August 1988: The route's predecessor route 38M is introduced; at the time, using air-conditioned single-decker buses.
- 10 October 1989: Route renumbered 238M.
- 4 November 1990: Riviera Garden Bus Terminus is relocated to present-day location.
- 27 September 1992: Via the former Tsuen Wan Ferry Pier Bus Terminus on Sundays and public holidays.
- 11 October 1992: Above arrangement cancelled.
- 16 January 2011: Due to the petition efforts of Waterside Plaza residents and Shek Chung Shan Primary School, an extra stop is added at Waterside Plaza on the Tsuen Wan-bound journey.
