The village of Jhorahat is named after ""Jhora""which means forest and ""hat"" means Bazaar

.The name was kept maybe because the place was habitated by cutting down hugh forest that was present there hundreds of years ago.

Economy

Farming and cultivation is the main source of income for people in Jhorahat.Being only about 5 km from Biratnagar,others work as laborers in factories in Biratnagar or some in higher ranks in various firms and government offices.Jhorahat chowk is the largest economic centre where a hat or Bazaar

 is organised every Monday and Friday.

Ethnicity

Jhorahat sees the mixture of various ethnic groups like Tharu,Musahar,Batar,Brahmin,Kshyatriya,Newar,Kami,Damain etc.Brahmin and Kshyatriya population mostly reside in the Jhorahat central area and others mostly in the scattered areas mostly Khuniyakatta,Tetariya,Batrain,Birta etc.
There were reports of race clashes during the madheshi revolution in 2009 when the ethnic minorities of Brahmin and Kshyatriya were threatened by the tharus and madhesis.However these disputes died shortly after the madhesi revolution was compromised.
