She gained a BSc and PhD at Glasgow University and from 1974 to 1977 did a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biology at Edinburgh University. After two years research at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge she moved to Imperial College, London University until 1985 and then back to the Department of Molecular Biology at Edinburgh, being appointed Professor of Molecular Biology in 1999. Her research interests are in RNA splicing.

She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1998 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

In 2003 she was awarded the Royal Society's Gabor Medal

Personal life

She was born Jean Duthie Lancaster to William and Jean (née Duthie) Lancaster and married Ian Beggs in 1972. They have two sons.
