There were rumours of a rat infestation after boys found (what they believed to be) a dead rat in the changing facilities. Teachers denied a infestation, telling pupils that it was a "bit of fur" that they found.

James Hamilton Academy there is also a Primary School (New Farm Primary School), and a Nursery (New Farm Nursery) on campus.
