In 2006, the TV program Carte Blanche claimed that her pupils who claimed to be victims of various abuses were lying and prompted by Maarohanye in order to receive more funding. Jackey Maarohanye faces charges of assault and kidnapping after allegedly being part of a group that held a reporter and driver from the Sowetan newspaper hostage for more than six hours at the school on 19 February 2007.

In 2009, the school was closed and vandalised after several exposés showed that Maarohanye (the school's director and headmistress), had been using the pupils and school as a 'cash cow' to draw money out of high-profile donors including Oprah Winfrey and Bill Clinton.

 (Jub-Jub) was arrested on charges of culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving. Molemo was involved in an accident whilst racing on the streets of Soweto. Four school teenagers were killed.
