Career

Thom studied at the National Academy in 1853. In 1859 he went to France with Corot and Frere in Ecouen. From 1864 to 1873 he worked in England, often exhibiting at the Royal Academy. His landscapes showed the influence of the second-generation Hudson River school painters. His genre paintings such as "Feeding the Ducks" and "Circus Scene".

Personal life

Thom was born in New York, the son of sculptor James Thom April 19, 1802 and Jessie Thom. James married Louise Giles and had a son Salvator Thom (b. 1865). After Louise's death, Thom married Sara Bloodgood, with whom he had five children: Ada (b. 1866), James (b. 1867), Blanche, Jessie, and another whose name is unknown. Ada married Frank Hoffman of New Jersey and had two sons: the future Governor of New Jersey Harold G. Hoffman

From 1884 on, Thom lived in Old Bridge, New Jersey. He died of pneumonia in Atlantic Highlands.
