The opening of the country’s largest car assembly plant in Khorassan in July 2008 is expected to increase capacity with the ability to turn out 100,000 vehicles per annum by late 2009. However, it will not necessarily increase production. Export opportunities are restricted to relatively low volumes ($60 million worth of cars were exported in 2007). Nevertheless, they should help push up output to 1.13 million units by 2012 ($200 million in exports expected by 2010).

Iran Khodro Wagon Factory in Abhar, Zanjan Province was inaugurated in 2008 and will manufacture 200 rail bus, urban subway, urban light train and monorail wagons, saving $300 million each year on imports.
