Like several other films by The Asylum, Invasion of the Pod People is a mockbuster
whose release coincided with the premiere of The Invasion
, although the plot of Pod People borrowed heavily from the 1956
film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, of which The Invasion is a reworking.
), a young woman living in Los Angeles, where she also works in an unknown position for a conglomerate situated nearby.
One night, the town experiences a freak meteor shower
. The next morning, Melissa continues with her usual pace of life, but as time passes, becomes gradually aware that the people around her have somehow changed since the meteorites fell, as though their minds are no longer their own. In one instance, Melissa's supervisor Samantha seduces her into having passionate lesbian

, even though Samantha never exhibited any signs of being a lesbian.
It does not take long for Melissa to realize that the townsfolk are actually a race of aliens known as the Pod People
, who grow in large seed pods and gradually take the form of a particular person, eventually taking control of them and inhabiting their bodies once the growth process is complete. The Pod People attempt to take control of Melissa, who attempts to flee the town and warn humanity of the impending invasion.
