It was thought that IBM hoped to be able to use this to increase their hold on the publishing industry, since such systems were rare at the time due to the unprofitability of publishing in many countries with poor economies. The software had been developed, despite its lack of financial viability on a for-profit basis, by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society
