References can be found on cricket being played in Indonesia as far back as the 1880’s. For example, in a recent bestselling book about the explosion of the Krakatau volcano and Jakarta society at the time, mention is made of a game played between the Batavia Cricket Club and a visiting circus eleven in Jakarta (the visiting circus team opted to play in full clown regalia and not surprisingly lost the match). In these early days of cricket in Indonesia and Jakarta, cricket was played on a ground where the National Monument (Monas) now stands.

Almost an entire century passed where little more is known about cricket in Indonesia but the formation of the International Sports Club of Indonesia (ISCI) in 1971 and a cricket section ten years later increased the interest in cricket in Jakarta. By 1992 there was enough regular cricket being played in the capital, such as friendly games and touring teams that the Jakarta Cricket Association (JCA) was formed and a competitive cricket league was established.

Around the same time as the JCA was founded something similar happened in Bali. Regular cricket matches at the Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur led to the formation of the Bali International Cricket Club (BICC) and a few years later Cricket Bali was formed. Today Cricket Bali is proud to have at least three clubs which are solely run by Indonesian players.

However the introduction of cricket to Indonesians didn’t take place in either Jakarta or Bali, but in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. An Australian veterinarian surgeon there was so eager to have his son continue to play cricket that he built his own cricket nets and taught some of his domestic staff the intricacies of the game. It is these individuals from Kupang who became the pioneers of Indonesian cricket. It wasn’t long before these Indonesian cricketers found themselves in Bali and playing cricket on a regular basis. Some were sent to Australia to be trained as level 3 coaches and they are now regional development officers managing development activities for Cricket Indonesia.

After the Indonesian Cricket Foundation (now called Cricket Indonesia) was formed in 2000, cricket grew from strength to strength. Indonesia joined the International Cricket Council as an affiliate member and was placed in the ICC’s East Asia-Pacific region. As part of the ICC EAP development program Indonesia receives funding and support from the ICC EAP to develop the game in all regions in Indonesia. Cricket Indonesia today has 16 centres in 14 provinces spread from Banda Aceh in the West to Papua in the East of Indonesia.

Cricket Indonesia’s regional associations organise leagues in their respective regions for seniors and juniors. Some Regional associations also host domestic and international tournaments which attract teams from Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, China and India. Regional associations have also started introducing women’s cricket programs to schools and some regions hope to soon have enough players to start women’s leagues.

While Jakarta and Bali remain the main centres of cricket in Indonesia, the game has and is being played in many other areas, most notably in Lampung, Kupang, Bogor, Medan, Bandung, Makkasar, Manado, Solo, and Balikpapan. Cricket has become a known sport in the country with the support of the KONI (National Sports Committee of Indonesia) and the Ministry of Sports and Culture. The Ministry of Sports has recognised cricket as a growing sport and has included cricket as a part of the 2010 PON (National Games) to be held in Jakarta.

The Indonesian national team took part in their first international tournament in 2002 in a regional 8’s tournament in Perth, Australia. A year later the first full Indonesian team competed in the ICC EAP Cricket Tournament in Japan, where Indonesia defeated the hosts on the opening day, In September 2005 Indonesia took part in the ICC EAP Cricket Cup in Vanuatu as part of the preliminary stages of qualifying for the ICC World Cup in 2011. The Indonesian national team also took part in the ICC EAP Trophy held in Auckland in December 2007. Most recently Indonesia competed in the ICC EAP Men’s tournament in 2009 in Samoa. As a result, Captain Putra Dharmawan and coach Soni Hawoe were invited to attend the ICC EAP High Performance camp at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane. Apart from the above international tournaments, Indonesia regularly takes part in South East Asian regional competitions in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Cricket Indonesia also organizes regular coaching and umpiring seminars and workshops with the help of the ICC EAP development team. Indonesian umpire Shahul Hameed’s success in the international scene is testimony of CI’s dedicated development programs. Shahul Hameed is now part of the ICC Associates and Affiliates Umpires International Panel standing in EAP tournaments in Japan and Vanuatu and in several ICC world cups including two under 19 world cups in Sri Lanka and New Zealand and the women’s world cup in Australia in 2009. He has also umpired in international tournaments such as, the inter-continental cup in Scotland and Abu Dhabi and a one day international series in South Africa, Holland and Ireland.

In 2007 Cricket Indonesia with the support of Tetra Pak and a local NGO called Eco Bali introduced a junior cricket socialization program as a pilot project in Bali. The main objective was to introduce the sport of cricket among school children in Bali and educate the children on environmental awareness and the importance of recycling. Tetrapak U15 program was an initiative that provided an excellent platform for cricket in Indonesia to work towards significant sustained growth and development. Tetra Pak Indonesia provided training to schoolteachers and cricket and nutrition minded parents on the nutritional benefits of drinking milk which they then passed on to the children. Cricket Indonesia and Tetra Pak contacted the village institutions dealing with improved nutrition and clean environment to mobilize them in the process.

This program was duly recognised by the ICC and was deservedly rewarded the ICC Global award for the ‘Best Junior Cricket Initiative’, as well as ‘Best Cricket Promotion and Marketing’ award in the EAP region. This program then went on to win the ICC Global award for the ‘Best Junior Cricket Initiative’. The success of this program and with Cricket Indonesia winning multiple regional and global awards for its unique mix of social messages and sports, encouraged Cricket Indonesia and its sponsors to spread this program nationwide to 16 provinces in Indonesia and started planning an ambitious junior development program for 2008-09.

Considerable thought and planning was put into the 2008-09 program, Not only did this program seek to have 30,000 children involved in cricket at the U15 age group it also had a strong and logical pathway system mapped out. This ensured participants can remain in cricket and find their particular standard where they can enjoy the sport, but also be challenged by stronger competition along the pathway should they desire. A particularly encouraging aspect of the program was the ability to generate excellent corporate support to financially back this program. Ultra Milk, one of the largest Milk producers in Indonesia came on board this program as a title sponsor and therefore the 2008-09 program was renamed “Ultra Milk U-15 Junior Development Program”

This program offered the opportunity for thousands of kids, both boys and girls, to get active and play sport, it also provided many opportunities for coaches, umpires, administrators, volunteers and family members to be involved which is great for social and community interaction. A particularly positive example of an additional benefit of this program was that a number of Indonesian coaches were engaged to coordinate and deliver this program and this undoubtedly taught them many new life skills as well as improving their management, administrative and cricket skills which helped their professional careers.

Through this program Cricket Indonesia distributed 500 starter cricket kits which contained plastic cricket equipment (stumps, bats and balls), milk cartons and other promotional materials. Cricket Indonesia development officers held ‘Introduction to Cricket’ workshops for teachers and children. Tetra Pak provided training to the cricket coaches on the nutritional benefits of drinking milk which the coaches then passed on to children and teachers. With the help of Eco Bali, Cricket Indonesia educated local communities on the importance of recycling and keeping the environment clean. As well as developing cricket.

The Ultra Milk - Tetra Pak program received three regional awards from the ICC EAP in consecutive years for:
Best Junior Cricket Initiative Award
Best Cricket promotion and Marketing Program
The above two awards were nominated for the ICC global awards and Cricket Indonesia won the ICC Global award for the Best Junior Cricket Initiative in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The program culminated in an international U-15 tournaments which CI hosted in July 2009.

Cricket Indonesia’s regional member associations run a number of popular domestic and international tournaments each year in Indonesia, which attract teams from all over Indonesia and the region.

Today Persatuan Cricket Indonesia is a member of KONI and having gained the recognised sport status by the government, cricket will be introduced in the South East Asian (SEA) games to be hosted in Indonesia in 2011 as an exhibition sport.

Cricket in Indonesia has grown from being a social game for expatriates to a recognized sport in Indonesia due to the strong volunteer base of the regional associations, dedication of Cricket Indonesia committee members and corporate sponsors like Rolls Royce, Crown Relocations, Tetra Pak, Ultrajaya, Tunas Group and many others. Cricket Indonesia is committed to continuing the growth of cricket in the country, designing innovative cricket development programs, developing a competitive national side and transforming Cricket Indonesia into a professional organisation.
