The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), was formed in the year 2001 by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The vision of the council is to usher in a green building movement in India and facilitate India to become one of the global leaders in green buildings by 2015.

With a modest beginning of 20000 sq ft (1,858.1 m²). green built-up area in the country in the year 2003, today more than 1053 green buildings ( as on April 2011) with a built-up area of over 648000000 sq ft (60,201,169.9 m²). are being constructed all over India, of which 147 green buildings are certified and fully functional
The Directory will serve as a ready reference to all builders, consultants, architects, contractors etc, and also serve as a single-point reference to those seeking inputs / details on green building material and equipment

Triggering off the green building movement in India is the first Platinum Green Building in India; CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in Hyderabad that was rated as per the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating system. IGBC-Local Chapters
To facilitate the spread of green building concepts throughout the Country and with a mission to reach out the IGBC vision at the regional levels, IGBC- Local Chapters were launched in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.Green Buildings Directory
With an aim to provide a single-point reference on green building products and technologies, IGBC has developed a Directory on green building materials & service providers, the first of its kind in India.The Directory will serve as a ready reference to all builders, consultants, architects, contractors etc, and also serve as a single-point reference to those seeking inputs / details on green building material and equipment
