The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), was formed in the year 2001 by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The vision of the council is to usher in a green building movement in India and facilitate India to become one of the global leaders in green buildings by 2015.

Green Building defined

"A green building is one which uses less water, optimises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building."

Green Building Movement in India

Triggering off the green building movement in India is the first Platinum Green Building in India; CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in Hyderabad that was rated as per the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Rating system. This landmark achievement put India on the global map of green building movement.

With a modest beginning of 20000 sq ft (1,858.1 m²). green built-up area in the country in the year 2003, today more than 1053 green buildings ( as on April 2011) with a built-up area of over 648000000 sq ft (60,201,169.9 m²). are being constructed all over India, of which 147 green buildings are certified and fully functional

Rating Systems

As of April 2011, IGBC has developed the following green building rating systems for different types of building.
  • LEED India for New Construction
  • LEED India for Core and Shell
  • IGBC Green Homes
  • IGBC Green Factory Building
  • IGBC Green SEZ
  • IGBC Green Townships

IGBC-Local Chapters

To facilitate the spread of green building concepts throughout the Country and with a mission to reach out the IGBC vision at the regional levels, IGBC- Local Chapters were launched in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.

Green Buildings Directory

With an aim to provide a single-point reference on green building products and technologies, IGBC has developed a Directory on green building materials & service providers, the first of its kind in India.

The Directory will serve as a ready reference to all builders, consultants, architects, contractors etc, and also serve as a single-point reference to those seeking inputs / details on green building material and equipment

IGBC AP

IGBC AP - Indian Green Building Council Accredited Professional is a credential for professionals to participate in green building projects.
