. The state park is on the site of a former Air Force Base that was closed before completion in 1959.

According to Paul Freeman, the base was planned to house jet fighters to protect in case of a Soviet attack on Chicago and Milwaukee. The main runway had been graded and the subsurface prepared. However, construction was suddenly halted on October 2, 1959, a mere three days before concrete was to be poured. The base was considered excess property in 1960. In 1974, the state of Wisconsin purchased the property from the federal government, and converted it to the state park it is today.
