Her career with Heart began in 1996, after graduating with a degree from Cardiff University, where she had studied journalism. She originally applied for a job as a tea girl at the station, but after her stint as a travel presenter on Cox and Bumphrey breakfast show, she went on to become a full time presenter.

Prior to June 2006, Hellon co-hosted the weekday Heart Breakfat along with Ed James, but left temporarily to give birth to her first child. Sarah-Jane Mee deputised for her during this time, and became the permanent co-host of the breakfast show after Hellon's brief return in late 2006. Hellon then presented the Sunday morning breakfast show along with Ed James until moving to Wyvern in 2008.
