. Han had already heard of Kong Xiu's fate, so he discussed with his deputy Meng Tan (孟坦) on how to deal with Guan.

When Guan reached the city gate and failed to produce a pass, Meng rode forward to challenge him to a duel. Within three rounds, Meng turned around and sped towards the gate. However, Guan's steed, the Red Hare

, was faster, and Guan caught up with Meng and killed him. Just as Guan pulled to a halt, Han, who was lying in ambush nearby, suddenly fired an arrow that hit Guan in the left arm. Guan pulled out the arrow with his mouth and galloped towards Han, who was attempting to flee. Guan caught up with him and killed him.
