Hamsalekha was born on 23 June 1951 as Govindaraju Gangaraju. He is married to Latha, who is an established playback singer. Hamsalekha was introduced into feature films by director M. N. Prasad through a chance to write for the film Triveni. His debut film as musician was the 1981 film Rahuchandra. But his popularity soared only after his association with actor-director Ravichandran

Hamsalekha Desi Vidya Samsthe was established in 2004 - 2005. The free educational institution started with SC / ST and downtrodden children for 8th, 9th and 10th standard in English medium.

The academics taught through Dance, Drama & Singing. Started Arts College in 2007 - 2008 for those who go for DESI Degree Courses. A land is allocated near Channapatna for "Desi Degree Residential College".
He also runs a music class, where he encourages and mentors young talented singers.
