History

The first phase was built in 1961 on Mumford Road on the site of the old Saint Patrick's Industrial School for boys. Together with the nearby Simpsons-Sears building, constructed in the 1920s, The Halifax Shopping Center, Simpson-Sears and the Bayers Road Shopping Centre formed a shopping hub in west end Halifax. Additions and renovations were completed throughout the years, the largest of which in 1989. This addition added 75000 square feet (6,967.7 m²) to the Shopping Centre. Between 2000-2005, a large portion of the former Sears building across the street was demolished and redeveloped, known as the "Halifax Shopping Centre Annex". Today, the mall includes more than 1100000 square feet (102,193.3 m²) of retail, office and service space.

Renovation

In 2007 the mall completed a massive renovation, restoring the washrooms, hallways and the food court. The renovation also saw the mall getting new signage. Also, many of the mall's retailers joined in by updating or building new storefronts. In 2011 a lot of their stores will be renovated. Many high-profile retailers opened in 2011 including Sephora
