. Its headquarters are in the town of Buni Yadi at11°16′08"N 11°55′49"E towards the south of the area; the eponymous town of Gujba lies in the north of the area.

In the early 19th century it came under Fulani control, and eventually became part of the Fika Emirate

On 6 January 2000 the governor of Yobe State, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, restructured the state into 13 Emirates, including the newly created Gujba Emirate. The Emir of Fika protested and brought court action, but eventually acquiesced.
Mai Shettima Muktar Ibn Ali Gangaram, a former civil servant, was appointed the first Emir of Gujba on 3 June 2000.
