. While other titles in the Guitar Hero series support multi-player, this version is strictly single-player. Players attempt to match various kinds of notes as they scroll down the four lane track and meet with the note catcher. Each note type has an action associated with it. Tap Notes require the player to simply tap the note at the correct time to score. Hold lines, represented as a line that trails a Tap Note, require the player to tap and hold the note for the duration of the line in order to score. A successfully hold line adds a small amount to the player's "Star Power" gauge. Accent Gems, represented as orange bars that stretch across the track, allow the player to tap anywhere in the note catcher to score. Slide Lines, represented as a purple line connecting notes on the track, allow the player to play the successive notes without removing their finger from the note catcher, allowing the player to simply slide a finger across the notes with the correct timing to score. New to the series is the Strum Note, represented as a colored arrow that stretches across two or more lanes, which requires the player to quickly flick a finger across the length of the arrow, in order to score. Strum notes can also have a hold line at the end of the arrow, requiring the player to flick and hold for the duration in order to score. Completing consecutive series of notes will build up a player's scoring multiplier and add to the player's score for the song. Certain phrases of notes will be marked as notes with a star accent above them; successfully completing these add to the player's "Star Power" meter. When the Star Power meter is at least half-full, a player can activate Star Power to double the their scoring multiplier. It is activated by tapping the highlighted area above the note catcher, whereas force feedback is produced by the device to confirm activation. Players are rewarded with up to 5 stars for completing a song based on their scoring performance. Four skill levels are available in Guitar Hero, and are known as Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert.

The game feature a single play mode, similar to the typical "Quick Play" mode seen in other titles. Players can complete a large number of challenges for each song and instrument. Challenges are used as a gauge of player skill and to unlock various character customizations.

Soundtrack

There are six songs available by default on Guitar Hero. Available using Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection to the internet, players are able to download additional songs in the in-game "Music Store".
