The Green Mask was secretly private detective Michael Shelby (or Selby, in some early issues). He gained superpowers after being exposed to a mysterious "vita-ray." In Green Mask #1 (1940), the Green Mask was joined by a young sidekick, Domino.

Powers and abilities

The first Green Mask originally had no superpowers. Despite this, the first issue of his series retconned his origin so that he became the Green Mask after gaining a number of superpowers after being exposed to vita-rays; this included super strength, invulnerability, and flight. He would occasionally display other powers, usually as required by the plot. In addition to super powers, the Green Mask carried a gun.

Johnny Green

Fox Feature revived the character of the Green Mask in issue #10 of The Green Mask (August 1944); the artist and writer were uncredited. In this version, the Green Mask is secretly Johnny Green. He is the son of the original Green Mask, but his secret identity is retconned to be Walter Green. Johnny is a teenager who transforms into an adult when he becomes angry at any display on injustice (a cross between The Hulk

Powers and abilities
