GEN was established to respond to the increasing risks journalism faces. Its role is to gather editors with different knowledge sets and to start a dialog with engineers, developers and digital innovators. Its founding members are leading editors and top executives at The New York Times

Missions

GEN's objective is to define the future of journalism by empowering editors-in-chief and senior news executives looking for the preservation of editorial quality when working with publishers, media owners and news suppliers as the delivery of news is transforming into new digital platforms.

Activities

  • The annual conference NEWS!-News World Summit- which will bring together more than 400 editors-in-chief and executives from all media platforms in 80 different countries.
  • The Editors' Lab, focused on the development of mutual services, applications and content management systems (CMS) for the news media.
  • The Editors' Institute which provides certify training on media strategies, newsroom integration, new information platforms and social networking technologies.
  • The Editors' MarketPlace, a transactional platform between editors and suppliers for the news media.
  • The Newsroom Report, which focuses on the latest changes in newsrooms worldwide; it aims to be a guide for editors on how to adapt their newsroom to cross-media strategies and to enhance editorial quality.

Over 400 editors-in-chief and senior news executives have already joined the Global Editors Network. GEN members come from all platforms (print, broadcast, digital, mobile) and represent more than 50 countries and 300 media groups around the world. Their skills' diversity, as well as the balance between editors from emerging countries and senior news executives from developed countries, stands for the building of an open journalism model for the future and the creation of new journalistic concepts and tools.
