Rees lost his World title via TKO loss to Andreas Kotelnik in March 2008. He was well beaten by Kotelnik; the fight ending in the twelfth round via knock-out.

After more than a year out of action, Rees returned to the ring in August 2009 to beat Johnny Greaves in 4 rounds. On December 4, Rees entered the light welterweight prizefighter competition
