A FAB means an airspace block based on operational requirements and established regardless of State boundaries, where the provision of air navigation services and related functions are performance-driven and optimized with a view to introducing, in each functional airspace block, enhanced cooperation among air navigation service providers or, where appropriate, an integrated provider.

 and in particular in accordance with Article 8 of the Framework Regulation, the European Commission

 has issued a mandate to the Eurocontrol Agency for support in the establishment of Functional Airspace Blocks (FABs).

Currently the following FABs are in preparation in Europe:
  • Baltic FAB: Lithuania, Poland
  • NUAC, now DK/SE FAB: Denmark, Sweden
  • North European FAB (NEFAB) : Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden
  • FAB UK-Ireland
  • FAB Europe Central: Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Switzerland. Current status
  • FAB Central Europe: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia
  • Danube FAB: Bulgaria, Romania
  • South West FAB: Portugal, Spain
  • Blue Med FAB: Cyprus , Greece, Italy, Malta; plus Tunisia, Egypt and Albania as associated members; and Jordania and Lebanon as observers


Of the above only two have currently been declared following required EU procedures:
  • FAB UK/Ireland, declared Jul-2008
  • DK/SE FAB, declared 17 Dec 2009


The SES-II regulation requires all EU members to be part of a FAB by 2012.
