. Franklin Central was established in 1960, succeeding Franklin Township High School. Classes were taught in what is now Franklin Township Middle School West. The current school building was constructed during the years 1975 and 1976. Classes at the current building began in September 1976. The school underwent construction and renovation in 1990 and 2003. The school can accommodate approximately 2400 students with 408000 square feet (37,904.4 m²) of floor space. The Freshmen Academy, an addition to the main building, opened in the fall of 2009.

Franklin Central has full accreditation. The school has a traditional schedule with seven periods per day every week day with 18 week semesters. For eligibility and class ranking Franklin Central uses a 4.0grade point average

Courses are provided in Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Foreign Language, Industrial and Technical Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Visual Art, and as internships and vocational programs. The schools offers French, German, and Spanish as foreign languages. See the school curriculum here. Franklin Central competes annually in the Westfield Insurance Brain Game competition, hosted by WTHR Channel 13. During the 2006-2007 season the team made it to the final four, and in the 2007-2008 season came in second in the championship game. Most recently the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team was named the 2007 Marion County Champions. Also, the Cross Country Team was named the 2006 IHSAA State Runner-Up with Adam Green placing 4th in state and Jordan Mitchell placing 25th. Boys Swimming team has been Sectional Champions for the past 4 consecutive years.

Franklin Central has sent a wrestler to the state tournament for 25 years straight. Recent wrestling stars include 3 time State Champion Jake O'Brien, State Runner-Up John Wolf, State Runner-up and two time placer Nate Newport. Also including Dj Rackley going to state from 2005-2008.

Franklin Central has had several state championship representatives in Track and Field including, Chris Norris - 300m Hurdles, Rory Norris - 2 Time 110m High Hurdles and 1 Time 300m Hurdle Champion, Eric Fisher 1600m State Champion, Donald Washington - 2 Time Long Jump Champion and 1 Time State Runner-up. Chris Norris was also a United States Track and Field Team member winning 4 championship metals in Europe (100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, 2nd place 110m High Hurdles, 2nd 400m Hurdles, and 4th place in the Javelin). Rory Norris was a 2 Time NCAA Champion in the 110m High Hurdles and a 2 Time Olympic Qualifier in the 110m High Hurdles.

Franklin Central High School is home to 12 boys' sports including Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Track and Field, and Wrestling. Franklin Central also features 12 girls' sports including Basketball, Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Track and Field, and Volleyball.

Franklin Central's stadium, the Franklin Township Athletic Center, is a 13120 square feet (1,218.9 m²) multipurpose facility that is used for football and track and field. The stadium is six stories tall and has seating for 3,500 on the home side. The facility was built in 2004 at a one-time cost of $4.3 million.
