Flockton is a village in the Kirklees
district of West Yorkshire
, England
halfway between Huddersfield
and Wakefield
with a population of 1,410 (2006 estimate).
It is 7 miles (11 km) east of Huddersfield and 7.5 miles (12 km) west of Wakefield. The village extends along the A637 Barnsley Road. Flockton is relatively close to another small village called Grange Moor
. The village was once known for its "abundance of coal" but the coal mines in the area are no longer open. Flockton also has a sporting pedigree with cricket
and football
teams in the Huddersfield local leagues.
New Hall Prison
is located in New Hall Wood, on the other side of the Kirklees
/City of Wakefield
boundary east of Flockton. The prison holds a mixture of female adults, juveniles and young offenders.
Just under three miles to the west of Flockton is Flockton Moor, which is mostly a collection of farm houses. The local pub, the Dartmouth Arms, was replaced by Indian restaurant Cinnamon Lounge in October 2007.
A central point in Flockton is the area of Parkside, an area of council housing. The majority of houses here are traditional red-brick terrace houses. In contrast to this, Flockton is also home to a number of newer, mostly stone-built private developments, and is becoming increasingly popular as a commuter village, probably in part due to its proximity to the M1 motorway. Consequently, house prices are above average for the area. Although the village is relatively small, it receives quite a large amount of traffic due to the Barnsley Road running directly through the heart of the village.
