Encyclopedia
Flinders Plaza Shopping Centre in north Queensland, Australia will be one of Townsville's biggest shopping centres. The centre was originally set to open in 2010, however construction has not yet commenced. When built, it will be one of the largest multi level precincts in northern Queensland. The shopping centre is to be built in Townsville CBD, Queensland

The plaza will house two levels of retail, entertainment, alfresco dining and a cafe precinct covering a 1.6ha block in the city's heart. The $200 million project is a joint venture with local developer Laurence Lancini (Lancini Group) and national developer Austexx Pty Ltd, the company behind the Direct Factory Outlets. This development will be the first of its kind in the greater Townsville area and a major drawcard for the CBD.

Conceptual plans for Flinders Plaza include two main levels of retail that will house about 160 stores. The frontage of Sturt St will be developed as an `Eat Street' and will incorporate a variety of cafes and restaurants to cater for city workers, shoppers and tourists. Flinders Plaza will also include four levels of carparking to provide 1600 on-site spaces. A feature will be a six-screen Greater Union complex between the retail levels and the car park, with lounge bar, gold-class seating facilities, and a giant screen for movie premieres.

Flinders Plaza will offer a complete mix of retail. It will include fashion brand retailers that are not currently represented in Townsville, along with a diverse mix of homewares, haberdashery, fashion accessories, fine gifts, services, food court including coffee shops, restaurants and a cinema-plex, entertainment precinct and lifestyle and fitness centre.

Construction on the centre has been put on hold and the whole project has been shelved indefinitely due to the GFC. It now appears likely that the project will be cancelled altogether due to a lack of tenant interest and investment return.
