. The development was financed by U.S. Steel with a loan of $50 million. It was named in honor of Benjamin Fairless, then president of U.S. Steel, which operated the "Fairless Works" plant which employed most of Fairless Hills' homeowners at the time.

As of the 2000 census, there were 3,220 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples
living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
