and the Knights of the Dawn go to Obsidian Waste in Australia, another preserve, where they will be able to find the Translocator. They are ambushed by the Society of The Evening Star, who has taken over the preserve. Kendra and the others go to the Dreamstone, an area in the preserve, and enter a maze where they have to make a clay warrior that turns into stone and they all have to canoe to an island in the middle of a steaming hot pond and swim across freezing cold water, all in order to use the key from Wyrmroost to find the Translocator. A new character, a man named Vincent, drowns, his greatest fear.

The final task of the Dreamstone has them putting the key into a mechanical lion which is guarded by some mechanical bulls. While they are doing that, the Society comes with all their zombies, Torina, The Gray Assassin, and Mirav the wizard arrive to attack and try to lay hands on the Translocator. During the attack Seth gets hit by one of Torina's arrows and turns himself into gas to save himself from dying. The Knights finally are able to get the Translocator, which was inside of the key. Trask takes Elise, Kendra, then Tanu to his apartment, using the Translocator. Unable to save the others he then takes everyone to Fablehaven. After, Kendra uses the Translocator to save Warren from the 3-Dimensional knapsack room he was stuck in, when Gavin turned out to be Navarog the Demon Prince dragon, who burned the knapsack and trapped Warren. Seth gets caught by the wizard Mirav and is put in a bottle. He then finds himself in the fifth Secret preserve, the Living Mirage.

Upon being released from the bottle and healed, Seth learns of the Sphinx's past. The Sphinx tells him that he came to the Preserve as a slave millennium ago and that he worked his way up, all the while 'befriending' a Demon Nagi Luna, planning to steal the Preserves' artifacts and open Zzyxx. He tells Seth his plans because he is sure that he will win. He says that when using the Oculus Nagi Luna is helping him get his mind away from it so that he doesn't go insane like nearly everyone else who tried using it. Also, he says that he will open the demon prison and if they do not want to come out under his control he will close it. Seth then gets put in a cell.

The people at Fablehaven then open up a compartment in the attic that should only be opened if the end of the world is near. Inside the compartment is a note telling them to how to use the Chronometer, to go back to talk to Patton Burgess, which they do. Patton tells them that in order for The Sphinx to open Zzyzx, he will have to kill all five of the Eternals and possess all of the Artifacts. They will have to find a way to transport them to Shoreless Isle, located in the Bermuda Triangle, and to find a different way back.

Seth befriends a person named Bracken, who uses secret passageways to move about the dungeon. Bracken informs Seth that his parents might be there but that he cannot get to them. Seth is unsure if he can trust Bracken, who decides to take him to someone who can vouch for him. Seth is shown Maddox, a fairy trader who had traveled to the fallen preserve in Brazil, Rio Branco, and believed to be dead. Maddox tells Seth that his new friend is on the up and up. The three decide on a course of action to try to get free of the dungeon by staging an uprising. Bracken reveals to Seth that he is a unicorn

, stuck as a human, based on a decision he made long ago. He makes Seth a coin so they can communicate over a distance.

While at Fablehaven, Grandma Sorenson wakes Kendra up and tells her Vanessa has revealed her secret to Grandpa Sorenson. There are two masked strangers that come to the house and using the Chronometer they travel back in time with one of them, so as the Sphinx will be unable to spy on them in the past. Kendra finds out it is actually her Grandma Larsen who she thought was dead. Grandma Larsen tells her, she and her Grandpa, who is alive as well, have been spying on the Sphinx. They used stingbulbs in order for people to think they had been asphyxiated because of a gas leak. They make a plan to use the Translocator in order to steal the artifacts from Living Mirage and to save Seth. When they do, the dwarf Tollin, the second masked stranger, takes the Translocator and the Sphinx captures them all except for Warren.

Seth hears a knock at his cell door and discovers the Translocator and the Sands of Sanctity along with a note. It tells him that should use the Translocator to flee and get help. First though, Seth transports to the Sphinx's Study to try to find the other Artifacts. He is interrupted by a surprised Sphinx and flees using the Translocator. Unsure of what to do, Seth decides to fulfill his promise to Gralaus. Seth tranports to the demon's lair and uses the Sands on him. Gralaus is instantly healed and reveals himself as the evil demon he is. Overpowering Seth, he tells Seth that the Demons are working against the Sphinx and he destroys the foundational treaty of Fablehaven, which are agreements the creatures made, and steals the Chronometer from the house. Coulter dies as a result.

Kendra is then there with the Sphinx, who tells her about his plans to open Zzyzx. Kendra is then put in Seth's old cell. She is found by Bracken, who tells her that he knows Seth. As cautious as her brother, Kendra is unsure if to trust her new ally. Bracken suddenly says he has to go, as the alarms alerting him to trespassers in his cell, go off. Following him, Kendra sees that Warren is the intruder. He tells them that as soon as the dwarf dropped him off, he started, on the move, which allowed him not to get caught by the Sphinx. Coulter's invisibility glove also helped Warren stay out of captivity. He tells them that Gralaus has the allegiance of most of the Society of the Evening Star. If the Sphinx doesn't follow, he will end up in his own dungeon. The Sphinx gave Warren instructions on how to get out of the preserve because the Sphinx can't open Zzyzx on his own terms. For now, the Sphinx is helping to prevent the opening of Zzyzx. Warren takes Kendra and Bracken out of the great ziggurat, which acts as the dungeon.

Seth is leaving the main house, after Coulter's dying words, when the satyrs, Doren and Newel, show up. He promises them a flat screen TV, a generator, two hundred gallons of gasoline, and a DVD player. if they will help him. Seth finds a message hidden behind the fireplace at the old Manor. It's a bottle that contains a gas figure of Patton, who gives him advice on how to save the world. On their way back to the house, Seth encounters Centaurs, who say that with the boundaries gone and the treaty fallen, they are claiming all of Fablehaven as their own. Seth denies their right of claim. In return, the Centaurs give Seth and his companions until the following sundown to leave or be punished. Seth goes into the dungeon to remove Vanessa from the Quiet Box. Seth then finds three Wraiths from the Hall of Dread and commands them to guard the dungeon, stables, and the old manor (since Gralaus destroyed the foundational treaty).

Kendra, Bracken, and Warren spend most of their time avoiding and hiding from the creatures of Living Mirage. They come to a pass where they can go two long less dangerous ways that would mean certain death or pass through a deadly, but short, Beckoning Grove. Bracken makes little dirt balls to put into their noses to reduce the alluring smell of the Fruit. Along the way Warren comes under the spell of the Fruit and fights Bracken to try to eat some. They make it out unharmed. Bracken is glorified by fairies, who bring him food to eat, which he shares with his companions. The scouting fairies then come across the Guardian sphinx

, who gives them three riddles Bracken and Kendra answer correctly and are able to enter the Sealed Shrine of the Fairy Queen. She tells them that she will send help to get Warren, Kendra, and Bracken out of Living Mirage. Bracken speaks to the Fairy Queen privately.

Back at Fablehaven, Seth seeks the advice of Patton Burgess, which comes in the form of a gaseous form of Patton. Seth captures the leprechaun

Cormac, who then gives him the items (a bell, whistle and music box) Patton gave to Cormac to safeguard. Seth, Hugo, Vanessa and the satyrs go on a car trip to see the Singing Sisters, as Patton suggested, in order to find where the sword of light and dark, Vasilis, is located. Upon arrival, Seth must deal with the sentinel of the Singing Sisters first. He asks Seth why he must see them, and his reply, the magic words, "I have no other choice", grants him an audience with them. Before departing, the sentinel gives Seth a sandwich, a soda, and some advice on how to deal with the Sisters. Once there Seth gets three proposals from each of the Sisters, three haggard women, who's arms are linked to one another, where their hands used to be. He declines each one. Seth then makes a proposal that they would help him find the sword and he will give them in one years time Vasilis, a wraith and one item of their choosing that Seth will bring using Vasilis. They agree and tell him that the sword is behind the Totem Wall. The Sisters also tell him which Totem faces to speak to and what to say to them to be granted access. He is given a map to the Walls location.

Raxtus, a small dragon who is a friend of the Fairy Queen that is able to travel into the Fairy Queen's realm, shows up through the shrine as a surprise for Kendra, and as a way to leave Living Mirage. He carries Bracken, Kendra and Warren in his claws as he flies from the Preserve. They are attacked by a Roc, whom Bracken convinces to leave them alone. But before long they are attacked by harpies, one of which manages to injure Warren. Raxtus kills the attackers and takes them out of Living Mirage. They decide to leave Warren with a healer he knows in Istanbul before continuing on their quest to save the three remaining Eternals.

to find the Totem Wall. He goes to where the Wall is and speaks to the Totems he's supposed to. They ask him what he hopes to achieve by acquiring the sword and how he plans to help them. Seth tells them that he will destroy the evil that lives inside of the Wall. They allow him to enter inside and caution that many do not return. Inside he finds the Standing Dead. He may only pass if he passes through the room without experiencing fear or else they will come to life and claim him as one of their own. He gets scared because of how creepy they look in the torchlight. By remembering Coulter, Seth regains control and courage. He is allowed to pass. At the end of the room, Seth finds a door and opens it. In the room is undead person that is mostly stone, Morisant, the oldest and main wizard who created Zzyzx. He allows Seth to take Vasils, the Sword of Light and Darkness, telling him that the sword can only be given to another if the previous owner grants permission. Even in death it cannot be taken. Morisant's only request was, in return for the sword, Seth would slay Morisant and his army of the Standing Dead. Seth agrees.

Kendra and Bracken go to help one of the Eternals, Roon. They find out that he is dead. His protector, a shape shifter named Niko, tells them where the next Eternal is. His name is Mark, and is a hollow shell of a man. They go to him and he said he does not want to live any longer and doesn't care whether Zzyzx is opened. He just wants to die. The Society, who has been following them, comes up and kills the Eternal, Mark. They then find the next eternal, Civia. She has been on her guard for many years, able to speak almost one hundred languages, and the hit squad, including the lieutenant of the Knights of the Dawn, Trask, under a the control of a narcoblix, a friend who has been with Kendra multiple times to find artifacts, of the Society of the Evening Star come and tries to kill Civia. Eventually she dies by a phoenix arrow shot by Torina. Bracken then kills the Gray Assasian and Mirav using his second horn which was brought by Mirav. Torina bites Bracken in attempt to drain his youth, and ends up dying. They all meet up at the place where the ship Lady Luck will take them to Shoreless Isle. They use the items to summon the Lady Luck. Seth uses force to convince the ghost of the Lady Luck to take them there. They find a Fairy Queen Shrine near Zzyzx. Kendra and Bracken speak once more to the Fairy Queen, who tells them that she has destroyed all of her other shrines, and they have one final secret plan that will grant them success. The Astrids have been coming out from the shrine and when Kendra kisses them, they turn into brilliant warriors. There she finds out Bracken is the son of the Fairy Queen.

After the quaking subsides, the demons come out of the prison and start attacking. The Sphinx and Seth use the Translocator to go into Zzyzx, where the demons are coming out of, to try to reclaim the remaining artifacts. Seth fights and kills Gralaus before throwing Vasilis at Nagi Luna to destroy her, but is then affected by a poisonous bite he received in battle from from Graulas. The Astrid Peredor carries him and Vasilis to safety, where he is healed by the Sands of Sancity. They get all five artifacts.

Creatures of Light have been spewing forth from the Fairy Realm and either engage the enemies or scatter off. The Fairy Queen and Bracken fight the Demon King, Gorgrog, a large being with antlers on his head and bodies chained to his belt, who seriously wounds Bracken. A spark of adrenaline makes Kendra ask for Vasilis to try to save the Fairy Queen and Bracken. The Demon King is killed by Kendra but not before the Fairy queen was able to save the Fairy King from his imprisoned place as one of the chained bodies. The demons, seeing the Fairy Shrine open and unguarded, are unable to resist the urge to turn the Fairy Queen's realm, a place of Light, into a place as ugly as Zzyzx and all enter, where there is only one entrance and exit. That is to be the new Demon Prison and the Fairy Queen will make the former Zzyzx her realm.

Agad the wizard becomes the caretaker of Living Mirage and helps them repair Fablehaven, recreating the treaty, fixing both the House and Mansion, and punishing the Centaurs for trying to overthrow the Preserve by reducing roaming privileges. Bracken reclaims his first horn, the prize which the centaurs valued. They release Kendra and Seth's Parents (who now, obviously, believe in the magical creatures). The Sphinx is made an Eternal because they think that it will be the best punishment for him. Bracken shows up at Fablehaven and shows Kendra the first Shrine to the Fairy Queen is at Fablehaven. He then says he likes Kendra but says they can't be together, yet, because Bracken has to help his mother rebuild her realm. The Fairy Queen permits Kendra to visit on occasion. It is hinted that Kendra wants to be an Eternal.

New characters

Bracken- A unicorn that is imprisoned by the Sphinx in the dungeon in the Living Mirage preserve. Bracken is trapped as a human due to him parting with his third horn, which became the Artifact known as Font of Immortality. He meets Seth and Kendra at different times in the dungeon, but he, Kendra, and Warren escape with the Sphinx's help after the demon Graulas has taken all of the artifacts from Fablehaven and usurped the power of the Sphinx. Later in the book Kendra learns that Bracken is the Fairy Queen's son. He has a crush on Kendra.

Nagi Luna- An old demon in the dungeon (Ring of Constraint) at Living Mirage, she was the demon that trained the Sphinx to become a full Shadow Charmer. She has drooping purple skin and looks harmless, but she can take possession of people and attack with inhuman strength. She has a slab of concrete chained to her ankle with arcane characters carved onto it. She dies when Seth flings Vasilis at her shortly after the opening of Zzyzx.

The Gray Assassin- A zombie of the Society of the Evening Star that is notorious for being able to kill just about anyone. He has two curved swords that of which the handles are fashioned with dragon teeth, and heavily enchanted. Bracken kills him after Civia, the last Eternal, dies.

Mirav- A wizard, formerly a dragon, that is a member of the Society of the Evening Star. He is more powerful at night and cannot withstand daylight. Bracken kills him after the wizard foolishly tries to use Bracken's second horn against him.

Morisant- One of the wizards that founded Zzyzx. He tried to cheat death by trying to make himself one of the Undead, which doesn't work. He is the owner of Vasilis and gives the great sword to Seth, he also created the Standing Dead.

Eternals- People that are the final step at opening Zzyzx. They can only be killed by phoenix fire, a unicorn horn, dragon breath, or any other weapon of similar potency. The last three Eternals are Roon, Mark and Civia.

Old Characters

Agad- A wizard who was once a dragon, but permanently transformed into his human avatar forever to gain more magical power. He is the caretaker of one of the three dragon sanctuaries/preserves, Wyrmroost, which are closed to human interference. After the fight on Shoreless Isle, the dragons at Wyrmroost are governed by the king of dragons, Celebrant, because Agad is named the caretaker of Living Mirage after the Sphinx has asked to become an Eternal.

Fairy Queen-The "queen" of fairies. She is immensely powerful and is respected by all creatures of light. The Fairy Queen is widely considered the most powerful entity of creatures of light. It is not widely known that she is a unicorn. Bracken is her son, and the Fairy King is her consort.

Coulter Dixon-A friend of Seth and Kendra's grandparents. He collects magical relics and is in the Knights of the Dawn. He is known for owning a frayed, fingerless leather glove that makes you invisible when you hold still. He is killed by Graulas after he is healed by the Sands of Sanctity.

Vanessa Santoro-A traitor to the Knights of the Dawn. She worked for the Society of the Evening Star, but she knew the Sphinx's true identity. Fearing for his safety, the Sphinx imprisoned her in the Quiet Box at Fablehaven. Because of what the Sphinx did, she switched sides.

The Sphinx-Former Captain of the Knights of the Dawn. When exposed as a traitor working for the Society of the Evening Star, he ran to secrecy and began to plot and kill even more than he had before. After Graulas usurped control of the Society from him he assisted the Knights to defeat the demon horde.

Tanugatoa (Tanu)-Potion master and friend of Kendra and Seth's grandparents. He is a Knight of the Dawn.

Graulas- An old demon who officially made Seth a shadow charmer. When healed with the Sands of Sanctitiy he betrays Seth and plays a major role in the opening of the demon prison, Zzyxx. He is killed by Seth with Vasilis shortly after the opening of Zzyzx.

Raxtus- A friendly young dragon who befriends Kendra in the fourth book. He is the son of the great dragon Celebrant but is considered pathetic because of his small size. Celebrant eventually accepts his son after he proves himself in battle.

New places

Living Mirage- The final secret preserve that contains the Font of Immortality. The Sphinx is the caretaker of this preserve. It is an extremely dangerous preserve, with a ziggarut dungeon and powerful creatures.

Shoreless Isle- The island where Zzyxx is located. It is an immense island with beauty. The island can only be reached via unconventional means because of an enormously powerful distracter spell, placed there by Zzyxx's creators.

Stony Vale- A secure preserve in Scotland where Kendra goes to talk to the Fairy Queen.

The Singing Sisters Lair-It is a small island in the Mississippi River where the Singing Sisters reside. Operated by trolls. The island possesses an apparently human guardian tasked with dissuading those who are not willing to make the sacrifices necessary to bargain with the Sisters. His method of doing so involves a friendly chat, peanut butter sandwiches, and root beer.

The Totem Wall- A wall made of totems that will talk when addressed on top of a stump. They are very wise, and hide many secrets and items. Seth destroys Morrisant, who was trapped within the wall, and took Vasilis from its hiding place.

Release date controversy

The release date was planned to be March 23, 2010; however, some major booksellers started selling copies on March 19, 2010. Shadow Mountain, the book's publisher, was alerted of this later that day, but thousands of copies had already been sold. Due to this, after receiving apologies from the booksellers, Shadow Mountain allowed the booksellers to continue selling copies, and changed the official release date to March 19, 2010.
