, Kendra is inducted into the Knights of the Dawn, where she meets Gavin, and they are sent on a mission with Warren and Dougan to retrieve a second artifact from a magical preserve in Arizona called Lost Mesa. Returning to Fablehaven, she finds the preserve about to be overthrown by the Shadow Plague. She once again goes to the Fairy Queen for help, who gives her a powerful talisman of light to destroy the source of the plague - the cursed nail. She is told that the one to connect the two will destroy the plague, but will also lose their life. Lena makes the sacrifice and touches the two, dying in the process. Patton informs her that the Journal of Secrets is not an empty book, but full of messages written in a secret fairy language in Umite wax. Book 4 will most likely reveal his messages to her to help her with her future challenges. Gavin also lets Kendra know in a letter that he is interested in getting to know her better. Kendra is both dreading, and looking forward to the future.

Fablehaven: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary

In book 4, she gets kidnapped while a stingbulb fruit, which provides an almost exact duplicate of a person, along with their memories, takes her place to fool the others. She ends up in Monmouth, Illinois where she is held hostage by a lectoblix named Torina Barker. The Sphinx forces Kendra to use his newly-found artifact, the Oculus, which allows him the power of unlimited sight. However, the Oculus is very hard to control and Kendra barely escapes losing her mind with some help from the Fairy Queen. Kendra receives outside help, that turns out to be from Grandma Larsen(who had staged her own death to protect her family) and is given an extra-dimensional knapsack. Through this knapsack she is allowed to escape with the help of another stingbulb, and she eventually makes it back to Fablehaven.

At the preserve, Kendra reveals that the Sphinx has the Oculus, and that he can find out the information regarding the 4th artifact, information supplied to Kendra from Patton through the journal. The Sorenson's and company find out that the artifact is located at Obsidian Waste, a preserve in Australia. Patton hid the key to that preserve at Wyrmroost, trying to make the artifact harder to retrieve for his enemies. Wyrmroost, a dragon sanctuary that is considered a death trap. The Knights of the Dawn assemble a team to go and retrieve the artifact, including Kendra, Warren, Tanu, Mara, and Gavin. At the sanctuary, Kendra guides the team to the gate of Wyrmroost, which had a powerful distracter spell on it. Kendra retrieves the location of the key: the Dragon Temple, a place where it can be considered punishable by death by the dragons. After receiving aid from a sky giant named Thronis and a unique fairy-dragon named Raxtus, the team retrieves the key. Outside the temple, a dragon ambush takes place. Gavin reveals himself to be a dragon, and temporarily subdues the dragons. Then, the dragon Gavin turns around and eats Dougan. Kendra was stunned and utterly betrayed; Gavin, Navorog, just ate her friend. At an area in Wyrmroost called Sidestep Cleft, Gavin reveals himself to be Navorog to Kendra. Navarog retrieves the key (a giant 80-pound object that resembles a pineapple) and then burns the knapsack, therefore trapping Warren inside till they can find a way to release him. Raxtus then comes to Kendra's aide, but would not attack Navarog. Kendra then convinced Raxtus to by getting Navarog to reveal his plan of killing Celebrant the Just, Raxtus's father. Raxtus then eats Navarog in four bites. Kendra was happy that the dragon was gone but Dougan fell, Mara was MIA, and Warren imprisoned with a Yahtzee-loving hermit troll.

Kendra returns home along with the rest of the team, and she is comforted by her grandparents. Her grandfather is revealed to be the new Captain of the Knights after coming out of retirement. Along with that good news, bad news is also revealed: The Society of the Evening Star has abducted her parents.
