It is best known as the address of the headquarters of A. P. Moller-Maersk, the largest shipping company in the world. In Danish media and daily usage, the street name is often used as a synonym for company's top management.

History

The boulevard was laid out on Kastellet's southern esplanade from 1782 to 1885. It quickly became a popular venue for promenades. Since then it has undergone a number of changes and only little remains of its original character.
