History

The current Endeavour Bridge opened to traffic in May 1951. It was part of the General Holmes Drive extension to six lanesways, which was the first 'county road' upgraded as part of the County of Cumberland Scheme.

Origin of the name

Endeavour Bridge takes its name from the HMB Endeavour, the ship commanded by Captain James Cook, an English explorer, navigator and cartographer. Captain Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first recorded European expedition to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia. They arrived in nearby Botany Bay in 1770.
