History

Some homesteaders and other settlers were established in the area before the arrival of the railroads, but the majority of newcomers arrived by rail later. In 1909, the Rural Municipality Monet 257, Saskatchewan was organized. It was named after a local farmer, Fortunat Monet In 1974 the Elrose rink burned to the ground. This led to the construction of the beautiful Uniplex Recreation Centre. This has become the center for social activities in Elrose and has seen some great young hockey players skate on its ice. In 1981 the town formed the West Central WheatKings Juvenile B hockey team that was a provincial powerhouse, making it to the Provincial finals two years in a row.
Jim Dorgan, former teacher at Elrose Composite, provided the organization that led to many Elrose sporting titles. Mr. Dorgan was particularly gifted as a wrestling coach, and there were a series of wrestlers who went on to win provincial titles under his tutelage.
While the Town of Elrose has diminished in population over the past 20 years, many of its former residents who have made significant contributions to society, are proud to call it home.
