Dunlop Tyres is an international
United Kingdom-based company founded in 1888 by
John Boyd Dunlop after he invented the modern
pneumatic inflatable
tyre. Its first factory opened in
Dublin in 1889.
The company is now based at the Fort Dunlop factory in
Erdington,
Birmingham, opened in 1891. The company today makes various tyres for all vehicles including the most popular motorbike tyre as well as having a close association with
motorsport. During the 1970s, Dunlop pioneered the world's first 'fail safe' tyres, permitting a vehicle to continue moving safely even following a blowout.

Parent company of Dunlop Tyres was the Japanese company Sumitomo Rubber Industries, which works alongside Dunlop Tyres today together in a Joint Venture with the company Goodyear.
Dunlop is the sole tyre supplier to
British Touring Car Championship for 2003 to 2006 and the Australian Touring Car Championship from 2002 to date. The firm also makes tennis rackets and other sports goods although this is a manufactured by Sports World PLC.
