The administrators, faculty and staff of DCHS seek to educate the complete student. Classroom activities are designed so that students focus on upgrading their oral, written, listening, and speaking skills. Dougherty High was founded in 1963, is the second younger high school ahead of Westover High. Dougherty Comprehensive High School has about 983 students. The school's ethnic race percentage is 96% African-American, 3% Caucasian, and 1% other. DCHS is a Title I school, nearly about 66% economically disadvantaged students. Dougherty Comprehensive High School has received strong attraction from the media coverage statewide and locally in the Southwest Georgia

 region. For the past three decades Dougherty High enjoyed its moderate success in the athletic program. As of 2008, Donald Poole is the school's athletic director and also serves as the head coach of the Dougherty High Trojans Boys basketball team.

Football and Basketball

Football won the GHSA Class AAA Championship in 1998. Dougherty also won two GHSA state basketball championships in the late 90's and early 2000's.

  • Alpha Mentee

Dougherty High School Alpha Mentee Organization has been existence at Dougherty High since 2000. The organization is designed to build character education, to familiarize high school students with basic life skills, such as developing self-discipline, having high self-esteem, and promoting positive values. The DCHS Alpha Mentee program also allows members to be involved in number service projects for the Albany community such as local nursing home visits and seasonal food drives every year in November and December. DCHS Alpha Mentee take part of 1 or 2 college visitations per year to serve student members that chooses to continue their education at a four institution or serve in a respectable military service. The Alpha Mentee organization is networked and affiliated under Alpha Phi Alpha

Phantom Trojan Marching Band

Over the past decade, the band has been invited to many NCAA bowl games. Members in this band appeared in the national acclaimed movie Drumline.

During the offseason of marching band, students participate in symphonic band, concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble, and other musical activities.

Chorale

DCHS chorale has won numerous awards and achievements locally and nationwide and received praise and acknowledgment from the local and nationwide media, including a recipient of the Grammy Signature Award NARAS Inc. and First Place and Overall Winners of 15 National Music Festival Competitions throughout the United States.

The chorale serves mankind through public performances and charitable contributions throughout their community and country. Events

  • DCHS Honors Day is a day for students who are recognized for their accomplishment academically and maintaining positive character at Dougherty Comprehensive High School. In past years, Honors day were held every four nine weeks in a school year. The tradition however ended in December 2007, as the ceremony awarded students academically for half of the semester (fall semester), while Honors day in May is recognized for the second half semester and end of the school year beginning for 2007-2008 school term.

Academic certificate awards are labeled: Top Trojan Award: Students with the highest average in a class subject. Academic Excellence: Students maintaining a A or B average in a subject. Most Improved Award: Students who continuously improve their grades in a subject.
Honors day is also recognized for students who are announced for their accomplishments for college acceptances, citizenships and scholarships. Honors Day is sponsored by the DCHS Renaissance Club.
  • DCHS Pageant is a female pageant for Miss Dougherty High. Candidates for the pageant must be a sophomore or junior. Each candidate represent their extracurricular organization. The winner will be represented as Miss DCHS for the next school year term. The DCHS pageant is held every year in the spring (March/April).

  • DCHS Gentillion is a male pageant that is held between early October to mid-November. Each candidate represent their extracurricular organization similar to the DCHS Pageant. Unlike the DCHS pageant, however; sophomores, juniors, and seniors are allowed to participate as candidates for the contest. The winner will be represented as Mr. DCHS for the school year they have won the title.

     Stop and Drop Rally
    is a new tradition to Dougherty High since the 2006-2007 school term. GHSGT Stop and Drop rally is a pep rally that is held in March of every year few days before the graduation test occurs preparing junior (11th grade) students for the GHSGT. The main purpose of the ceremony is to increase junior students (who are taking the test the first time) higher self esteem, guidance, and support for test takers to succeed for the Georgia High School Graduation Test. The ceremony is also entertained by students themselves showcasing their talent and display supportive mindsets toward their respectable peers.

  • DCHS Senior Week is a one week reward for seniors in honor for their hard work and dedication throughout their high school career. Senior week is usually held in late April to early May. Seniors express themselves doing school hours by wearing different attires every day in the week, for example nerd day, spirit day, and celebrity day. After school hours, Seniors gather together for social curricular activities such as bowling, movies, and other social public setting after school.

  • Homecoming (tradition) Every day of the week a special tradition is display throughout the school. On Friday of homecoming week, there is the traditional homecoming football game. During the homecoming game, homecoming court is introduced before the game or at halftime. The queen and king are announced based on votes from the student body during the game. The homecoming dance occurs the same day after the homecoming game.
