There is a very ancient Kamakshi
Temple here. It is called Moongilanai Kamakshi temple. The main door of this temple is never opened and poojas are performed only to the door. The main festival is during the month of February.
Majority of people are separated by cast and living separate streets and areas of the town. Major casts are pillai, Aasari, Chettiyar, Nadar, Parayar, Servai (Udayar) and Thevar (Pranmalai Kallar) and Muslims are in sizable amount. There are handfuls of Christian community who belong to CSI Church.
The name Devadanapatti stands for devastanam + patti, it means god’s place + inhabitation (village) in Tamil. This name might be given as the Kamakshi Amman temple is located here. Another temple of lord Shiva is situated on the top of the nearby Murugamalai hill. Mahashivaratri (Tamil month of Masi) on March is the only day which is celebrated in this temple and people from this town and nearby villages visit and worship Lord Shiva on the day.
There is saying that buttermilk will not be available in this town even it has three time harvests in a year. A story is behind this saying. It goes like this: Once a monk visited this village and went on begging. But no body gave alms. In angry mood the monk cursed the village as it will not flourish even it has great natural resources. People here believe it.
North and east side of the town has panoramic view as there is irrigated landscape. There is a scene of paddy fields, sugar hand, plantain fields and coconut tree groves. Water for agriculture is supplied through the canal and the check dams across the river from Manjalar Dam which is built down under the Kodaikanal hills. Water from the rivers Varattaru, Thalaiyaru and Iruttaaru fill the dam.
It has two schools. One is government school and another is run by a Hindu trust. The maximum people of this town are living on agriculture. There is a primary healthcare hospital which is being run by Tamil Nadu government. There is a police station and a post office. Weekly market is being assembled here which provides grocery and vegetables and cattle are sold in this market. It has 24 hour bus transport as it is located on Theni and Dindigul main road.
