He has written several textbooks, including Encounters with Chaos (1992) and six editions of Calculus with Analytic Geometry, with Robert Ellis. His grandfather Sidney Lewis Gulick (1860–1945) was missionary to Japan, and great-great-grandfather Peter Johnson Gulick
