The Decian persecution under the emperor Decius
was one in which the imperial Roman government issued tickets (libellus
) indicating that, as per requirement, citizens had sacrificed (sacrificati) or burned incense (thurificati); and libellatici (certificates) certifying that apostates had renounced Christianity.
