goals, Karanka returned to Athletic, with virtually no impact (six matches, although he scored once, in a 3–2 thriller success at Celta de Vigo

Karanka then returned to the second division, helping Real Murcia
achieve promotion in 2002–03, netting 13 goals and adding seven in next season's top flight, as Murcia returned to where they came from.

where his form deteriorated, scoring only twice in 33 games over two seasons. In January 2008, Karanka joined Real Unión
