Gameplay

Up to four players each stand on a different controller mat or dance platform and hit four colored arrows or buttons laid out in a horizontal and vertical cross (left, right, up, and down) with their feet to musical and visual cues. There are also 4 diagonally placed buttons (a circle in the upper left corner, an "x" in the upper right corner, a triangle in the lower left corner and a square in the lower right corner), which are used to navigate various modes in the game such as “free mode”, “club mode,” “dance contest mode”, “Move mode” and “training mode”.

The core gameplay in “free mode” involves the player moving his or her feet to a set pattern, stepping in time to the general rhythm or beat of a song. During normal gameplay, arrows scroll upwards from the bottom of the screen and pass over a set of stationary arrows near the top (referred to as the "guide arrows). When the scrolling arrows overlap the stationary ones, the player must step on the corresponding arrows on the dance platform, and the player is given a judgement for their accuracy depending on how well they time their dance to the patterns presented to them (“perfect”, “great”, “OK” and “fail”). Longer green and yellow arrows referred to as "freeze arrows" must be held down for their entire length.

Successfully hitting the arrows in time with the music fills the "Dance Gauge", or life bar, while failure to do so drains it. Correctly stepping on a preset number of arrows prepares the "rhythmic detonator" which can then be activated for an additional bonus score by sliding the right foot up to the “up arrow” and then to the right to the “x” button. Upon completion of a song, the player is taken to the results screen, which rates the player's performance with a letter grade and a numerical score, among other statistics.

The four starting levels of difficulty in DDR ("beginner", "basic", "difficult" and "expert") differ depending on the characteristics of specific songs so that a particular player might find a particular song in “difficult” level to be easier than another song in “basic” level. Players can unlock a fifth level of difficulty ("challenge") for some of the songs by successfully completing their corresponding “expert” level of difficulty. In the “challenge” level of difficulty, players not only have to hit the 4 horizontally and vertically placed buttons, but in addition, they have to hit the 4 diagonally placed buttons (making for a total of 8 buttons) when their corresponding diagonally-pointed arrows scroll over the stationary “guide arrows” near the top of the screen.

There are other ways to change the gameplay to make it more complex or fun depending on the players’ tastes. For instance, players can use the “training mode” to repeatedly practice particularly difficult sections of specific songs in order to improve their level of play. In addition to traditional gameplay, the PlayStation 3 version features integration with the
PlayStation Move peripheral to allow the use of hand motions during routines, much like what had been done with franchise's releases on the Wii

.

In "Move" mode, four corner areas have been added to the screen. The move controller must be moved to cover the appropriate corner, to match any diagonal arrows that appear.
. Also, in “Club mode” the usual layout of arrows in the “guide arrows” section laid out onscreen from left to right in this order: left, up, down and right, change their order suddenly and frequently in unpredictable ways.
