The DEB railcar or 900/950 class trains were a type of diesel multiple unit
first used on the Coonamble railway line, New South Wales
, Australia
.
Built by the Department of Railways Water Supply Workshops at Chullora, they featured lightweight aluminium bodywork and were originally fitted with Hercules diesel engines and hydraulic transmissions.
Ten diesel rail motor sets were
introduced from 1949 to opearate country passenger branch lines.
From 1955 until 1990, air-conditioned 900/950 class trains in service were known as DEB railcar sets.
They provided services to Canberra as the Canberra-Monaro Express. They replaced the steam hauled Federal City Express.
The DEB railcar were also used on the South Coast line
and Southern Highland commuter services. They were withdrawn and replaced by Endeavour railcars in 1994. The Northern Tablelands Daylight Express to Moree/Tenterfield (dividing at Werris Creek) featured these railcars for many years through the 60s to the 80s.
