History

The event was established in 1901, and it was originally held in September. It was initially contested over 1,400 metres, and it was extended to 2,000 metres in 1906. It was abandoned throughout World War I

The race's venue was closed during World War II

, so it was not run from 1939 to 1945. Its only departure from Saint-Cloud came in 1954, when it was switched to Longchamp.

When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Critérium de Saint-Cloud was classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted to the highest grade, Group 1, in 1987. It is now scheduled for mid November, and it is Europe's last Group 1 flat race of the year.
