The racial makeup of the city was 68.77% White, 29.49% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.24% of the population.
There were 326 households out of which 28.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.7% were married couples
living together, 19.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who were 65 years of age or older. Church Street and Elm Street are divided one-way streets in the heart of town that create the town plaza, where many local cultural and commercial activities are held.
