In 1872, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation was formed by executive order. In 1892, the Reservation boundaries were re-configured and against the wishes of the tribes. The north half of the reservation was removed from the tribes. It was open to settlement by non-natives for homesteading and mining. The current boundaries of the reservation cover a total area of 1400000 acres (5,665.6 km²).
