Cleveland Council of Independent Schools
Encyclopedia
The Cleveland Council of Independent Schools (CCIS) is a consortium of independent schools in Northeast Ohio, serving more than 4,500 learners from over 50 communities. With a shared purpose to maximize each child's potential, our schools offer small classes, innovative curricula, individualized attention and nurturing environments where students feel secure and supported to find their voices. Our communities are socially, economically, racially and religiously diverse.

CCIS was incorporated in 1967 after several years of periodic meetings of the trustees and heads of four east side independent schools: Hathaway Brown, Hawken School, Laurel School and University School. The founding premise and today's mission statement remain essentially the same. In the words of the current mission statement, CCIS serves member schools and their constituents by promoting, supporting, and enhancing the values of an independent education in Northeast Ohio through the facilitation of meaningful collaboration. Presently, there are thirteen Northeast Ohio independent schools within CCIS. CCIS includes day schools, Montessori schools, boarding schools, single sex and coeducational settings, each with its own mission, culture and approach. CCIS schools share important characteristics: low student-to-teacher ratios, innovative curricula and passionate, highly-qualified teachers committed to the students' success.

Through exceptional academic arts, athletics and externships, our students realize their unique talents and potential. In our schools, you'll find toddlers learning to trust the world, teachers instilling strong value systems in adolescents, and students advancing with the intellectual habits, imagination and knowledge to success in college and beyond. Our schools help students find themselves.
