Football career

Brittain began his career at Portsmouth. The left back went on to play for Northampton Town. In 1911 he signed for Tottenham Hotspur in an exchange deal involving Walter Tull

. Brittain played for 42 matches for the Lilywhites in all competitions between 1911–13 before joining Cardiff City in 1920 where he featured in a further 75 matches.
