Biography

The Rev. Dr. Charlene M. Proctor is a 1977 graduate of Rogers Senior High School in Michigan City, Indiana; she received a B.A. in Telecommunications from Indiana University and went on to examine design, architecture, and urban planning. Interested in environmental research, raising environmental consciousness and systems philosophy, she went on to study the BASF Nylon 6 fiber repolymerization technology and the recovery of the future solid municipal waste stream. For her original research, academic study, and educational contributions, she earned an M.A. from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan (1994), and later, an M.S. from The University of Michigan (1997) and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2000) for her work in experiential learning environments.

Despite her education and success, she felt compelled to act upon her spiritual calling which began with encouraging women to see themselves as Divine and to educate them on the cultural conditioning that diminishes their potential. She wrote approachable and positive books for the mainstream audience on positive thinking and self-awareness, with the intent to teach an individual that the source of all power comes from their unique spark of divine creation that exists within. Her lectures and writings were informed by a life-long interest in metaphysics, woman-affirming spiritual traditions, Christian mysticism, and Eastern philosophies. She began to introduce the concept of Christ consciousness in earlier works, and wrote about the human desire to have a mystical experience of God.

Making the shift from social scientist doing left-brain driven corporate work to spiritual teacher commenced in 2000 with the formation of The Goddess Network an organization dedicated to creating empowerment programs for women. The integration of a holistic and spiritual work orientation as something lacking in the female work community was an idea that translated into experiential workshops, live lectures, and webinars for women from all walks of life. These programs were later delivered to homeless, single mothers living in transitional housing.
Reclaiming female power and self-esteem, and restoring positive images of the Divine within was a theme in her next two books. Women looking for a feminist perspective on spirituality or a spiritual perspective on feminism found the book informative and motivating. Her book Let Your Goddess Grow! 7 Spiritual Lessons on Female Power and Positive Thinking, received a IPPY Award in the Women’s Issues category, was a best-seller on the day of its release and drew upon many different spiritual traditions and philosophies including traditional Christianity and Gnosticism, Christian mysticism, New Thought, Hinduism and Science of Mind philosophy. The Women’s Book of Empowerment: 323 Affirmations That Change Everyday Problems into Moments of Potential was used to develop Moments of Empowerment for BeliefNet.com, a series of video affirmations for the world’s largest spiritual and personal growth website.

Unity Teachings and Oneness Ministry

In May 2008, she completed her ministry requirements at The Beloved Community in Oregon and focused on developing an interfaith message, moving from personal growth topics to more deeply spiritual themes. From 2008 through 2010 she studied at The Oneness University (Oneness India) in India and the Fiji Islands and became a Oneness Trainer. Drawing from both Eastern and Western traditions, she saw the oneness teachings presented by the oneness monks and Sri Amma Bhagavan in India, as a blend of self-help and empowerment lessons, psychology, spiritual philosophies, and mysticism. Seeing the congruency of these teachings with the New Testament Gospels, she wrote The Oneness Gospel: Birthing the Christ Consciousness and Divine Human in You. Published by Two Harbors Press, this piece describes the positive change at the level of consciousness that is needed when a person desires to release his or her suffering and emotional charges. She merged Eastern and Western viewpoints on spiritual development, and showed that by revisiting the basics in the New Testament gospels and the Oneness Teachings from India, our lives can become a process of deepening our relationship to the whole.

The Oneness Gospel showed that each individual bears responsibility for their spiritual transformation and can birth their Christ consciousness. Many Indian teachers, as well as Jesus, have offered this insight and encouraged people to open up to their potential. Christ consciousness is not a religion but a state of being available to everyone. It is an internal experience, a realization of the Divine within, or humanity’s spiritual source. When we listen openly and intuitively to God and see life clearly, we activate the Christ expression within, no matter our wisdom tradition.

Currently, is a contributor on Lifetime Television’s Lifetime (TV network) The Balancing Act where she offers spiritual perspective on everyday life to millions of viewers. She has also filmed a new self-help series is entitled “Your Journey to Joy” for Comcast On Demand. The “Your Journey to Joy” .series is designed to help viewers search from within to look for what they need to create their own personal journey to joy and happiness. Viewers can select from several spiritual lessons on positive thinking, self-discipline and empowerment.

“Joy is a word that sounds wonderful, but is an illusion to many,” said Proctor. “With my new series I will share some simple, easy ways to train your mind to help create the life and joy you desire. It will be a different journey for everyone depending on where you are in your life.”
